Often when we are feeling low we want to soothe our pain. For some it might be cheering ourselves up with a new purchase, for others it might be chocolate or a glass of wine. But for others their self soothing can be harmful and bring short term relief. Self harm can be physical and emotional. It is a way of soothing but not in a positive way. It can be in the form of cutting or putting oneself in physical danger. Anorexia and Bulimia is a form of self harm.
Therapy will help the client to understand the triggers, both conscious and unconscious and support the client in developing ways to manage difficult feelings in a positive way.
